Legacy of the Haitian Revolution: Impact on Other Countries

The Revolution may
have contributed to the end of slavery in other areas, including Chile, Argentina, and Britain’s Caribbean colonies, in the early 1800s. Many Haitian leaders invited anyone escaping slavery to take refuge in Haiti. Haiti also gave support and inspiration to people in Latin America fighting against colonialism.
Examine the chart to the left. You’ll notice that Haiti was the first nation in the Caribbean to win independence, and the first nation to abolish slavery.
The success of the Revolution forced racist Europeans and Americans to reevaluate their vision of a world dominated by white nations. In later years, observers would come to see Haiti as the first nation in the movement against European colonizers in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

“I can speak of...[Haiti]...not only words of admiration, but words of gratitude as well. She has grandly served the cause of universal human liberty. We should not forget that the freedom you and I enjoy to-day; that the freedom that eight hundred thousand colored people enjoy in
the British West Indies; the freedom that has come to the colored race
the world over, is largely due to the brave stand taken by the black sons of Haiti ninety years ago.... [S]triking for their freedom, they struck for the freedom of every black man in the world.... She has taught the world the danger of slavery and the value of liberty. In this respect she has been the greatest of all our modern teachers.”
—Frederick Douglass, U.S. statesman and former slave, January 2, 1893

  1. How important is inspiration in a long struggle? Explain why it is important to have examples and inspiration in a difficult fight. (Honors extension: Did the people of Haiti have inspiration for their fight? Explain your answer.)
  2. Do you believe that the world owes something to Haiti for teaching the world about “the danger of slavery and the value of liberty”? Is this debt different from the debt the French might owe? How might the world repay the debt that Douglass speaks of?

  1. 1. Inspiration is an important part in a long struggle because it gives us hope and faith not to give up on what we are fighting for. Its important because without inspiration or a desire to keep fighting people will assume that there is no point in fighting and want to give up, but if they give up we as a community we are now wouldn't be where we stand. The people of Haiti did have inspiration when fighting because they kept their head up high even when the fight got tough they didn't just stop fighting they all fought to the end hard and proud of their sacrifices

    1. I agree because there is also the thinking of that if we do not take a stand now who will. Inspiration is vital because we need to keep in mind what is at stake for the people and what must be obtained.

  2. 2. I believe that we owe Haiti for the sacrifices that they had to make during the time of slavery. I do think we owe Haiti something for teaching the world about "the danger of slavery and the value of liberty" The debt of Haiti is different from the debt of the French because is was the french fault that Haiti became what it is today and because of the slavery and scares that France left on the colony that is used to be. The world can repay the debt that Douglass speaks of by celebrating a day for all slaves and honoring the sacrifices they did for the world we live in today.

  11. France should not give any money back to the Haitians although they could use some for foreign aid. That could include things like building schools as education is the greatest power of all and can not be abused the same way as money.

  15. 2.No the world doesn't owe Haiti anything... Just because Haiti failed to realize the danger of slavery and the value of liberty doesn't mean we owe them. All that matters is that we've notice what they did wrong and avoided it. - Zyderrious and Selena

    1. I agree with you guys because without the strength and perseverance Haiti had then no country would have a clear understanding of what it means to stand for your own beliefs.
